Looks like I'm getting new eyes!

Okay, not literally new eyes. But I am having Lasik eye surgery next month.

After 27 years in corrective lenses of some sort, I'm taking the plunge. I had my consult last week, including a follow-up test to my left eye, and have been approved for the surgery.

In the doctor's words, I'm a very good candidate. Apparently my eyes are very healthy (despite being legally blind), and my cornea is thick (apparently most people who are declined are for the reason that they have a thin cornea. who knew?).

The cost is a bit much ($4400), but my insurance gives us a 15% discount (bringing it down to $3740). When you consider the fact that I now spend roughly $400/year on care related to corrective lenses (exam co-pays, contact lenses, glasses, contact solution, eye drops, etc)... well, it should pay for itself in less than 10 years. And when you factor in the issues with wearing corrective lenses (scuba diving, anyone?), we decided it was more than worth it (I figure my family & I have already spent roughly $10,000 on my eyes since I was first told I needed glasses!).

In fact, Jason's been trying to talk me into it probably since we got together.

But I'm a little wary of someone messing with my eyes, so... I procrastinated.

But, it's time.

As always, thanks for checking in!

Good for you! I have a friend that did it a few years ago and is so happy she did. She had no problems at all and has loved not wearing glasses or contacts. Good Luck!

I had mine done a few years ago. It was just like getting new eyes!
It was so worth it.

I wish I could remember exactly how many years it's been, but more than 7 or 8, I think. I went for an exam last month and I still don't need glasses, except I do need reading glasses/magnifiers now to read small print, but they told me that would happen as I got older, and I'm 44.5 so, yeah. (I just make the text size on my screens bigger and ignore the old age thing, haha!)

OH you lucky lady!! I'm jealous! (But very happy for you!)

I am not a candidate for Lasik. I give new meaning to the phrase crazy eyes.

My right eye has premature onset of macular degeneration.....so much so I see a geriatric eye specialist who is doing his darned to experiment and stop it. It's amusing when I go for my checkups because I'm the only patient they have under the age of 65. And yes, that means my right eye will be completely blind sometime in the not so distant future.

However, my left eye slightly farsighted (doesn't really need correction but since I already wear glasses....), with a high angle astigmatism. Otherwise normal - IE in no danger of losing vision. so I will never be completely blind. My eye doc likes to say how my crazy eyes belong to two different people.

LOL - at least glasses have gotten more stylish, right?

I'm so excited for you, and a little bit jealous! I'm a contact wearer and one day I want to be free of the little devils!

My boyfriend had the surgery done, and he has a serious phobia about people messing with his eyes. If he made it through, I bet anyone can!

YAY!! I have a phobia too. I have been wearing glasses or contacts since I was 12 years old!! I would love to wake up one morning and have 20/20 vision. I think it is great you are getting it done. Good luck! Let us know how it goes.

My friend TLW's had it done years ago, and said that she would do it again in a heartbeat! I have been trying to talk my hubby into it too, but with things the way they are right now, it isn't likely to happen any time soon, but maybe someday! Good luck my dear!
